Improving quality of care and outcomes for Aboriginal mothers and infants: a continuous cultural quality improvement program

This research focuses on ensuring culturally safe, continuous care for Aboriginal women throughout their perinatal journey.

Research overview

This research focuses on ensuring culturally safe, continuous care for Aboriginal women throughout their perinatal journey. It aims to address the complex challenges faced by Aboriginal women when transitioning between multiple healthcare services, often off-country.

The project has two key elements:

Training for health professionals – ‘Aboriginal Women’s Ways of Being and Knowing in Perinatal Care’ equips healthcare providers with knowledge to deliver culturally respectful care

Continuous Quality Improvement Process (CQIP) – This initiative evaluates cultural competence of services, encourages critical self-reflection among practitioners, and tracks self-reported improvements in care.

By strengthening cultural safety and continuity, this research supports better health outcomes for Aboriginal mothers and babies.
