Dr Kate Buchanan is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Midwifery with over 20 years of clinical experience. Her research focuses on midwifery philosophy, perinatal mental health and midwifery role and scope. Her project evaluates a midwife-led birth debrief to foster mental health wellbeing and reduce perinatal mental health concerns in Australian women.

Dr Kate Buchanan is a registered midwife with over 20 years of clinical experience in tertiary, rural, and homebirth settings. She currently serves as a Post Doctoral Research Fellow at ECU School of Nursing and Midwifery, focusing on midwifery philosophy, theory, and ethics. Kate’s research interests include the midwifery role in post-birth debriefing, and the provision of respectful, culturally safe care. She has received recognition for her work, including a VC International Research Collaboration Award. Her current research project examines the accessibility, appropriateness, and feasibility of a midwife-led debriefing tool aimed at mitigating perinatal mood disorders. By evaluating the tool’s effectiveness in reducing perinatal depression and anxiety, Kate aims to support post-birth recovery and improve maternal mental health outcomes through midwife-led interventions.
