Research Focus
Overview

Dr Weitao Lin is a cancer biologist and Research Fellow at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research and The University of Western Australia. His research uses advanced genomic and spatial technologies to investigate tumour heterogeneity, therapy resistance, and precision approaches to improve ovarian cancer treatment and patient outcomes.

Dr Weitao Lin

For 50 years, WIRF has conducted and supported research to improve the health of women, babies and families

Dr Weitao Lin is a cancer biologist and Research Fellow at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research and the University of Western Australia, where he leads the wet lab of the Systems Biology and Genomics Laboratory.

He obtained his PhD in Cancer Biology at the University of Hong Kong in 2017, establishing patient-derived nasopharyngeal carcinoma xenografts and cell lines that are now widely used across research communities.

Drawing on more than a decade of experience in primary tumour tissue culture, his research focuses on tumour heterogeneity, cell–cell communication, and therapy resistance.

Since relocating to Australia, Dr Lin has applied single-cell and spatial transcriptomics to study the tumour heterogeneity and tumour microenvironment in uveal melanoma and ovarian cancer.

He pioneered spatial platforms such as VisiumHD and Xenium in Western Australia, generating the first such datasets in Perth, and now develops ex vivo tumour avatars to predict chemosensitivity and overcome chemoresistance in ovarian cancer.

Preterm birth prevention program lowers rate of early births by up to 10%.
